What kinds of jobs can Chinese people do in the United States?

How do Chinese people in the U.S. make a living? What kinds of jobs do they typically pursue? Today, I’m going to provide you with a comprehensive overview. I studied abroad in the U.S., founded a company there, and have since established a branch office back in China—so everything I share is based on firsthand experience.
First and foremost, one must secure a valid visa to enter the United States. Currently available options include tourist visas, student visas, visiting scholar visas, K-1 fiancé visas, and EB-category immigrant visas; all of these allow for legal entry into the U.S. However, it is difficult to legally remain in the U.S. on a tourist visa, as one is generally required to return to their home country after six months. Student visa holders can quickly apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) to work legally, while visiting scholars are authorized to work immediately upon arrival. Holders of fiancé visas can typically obtain permanent resident status within approximately four months of entry, whereas EB-category immigrant visas grant immediate permanent residency, though the application process itself is often quite lengthy.
Typically, highly skilled professionals holding student or visiting scholar visas in the U.S. work in the IT sector—often as programmers, business analysts, or in similar roles—earning an annual salary starting at around $130,000. In the context of the United States, this level of income places one firmly within the affluent class.
Of course, I have also encountered many Chinese nationals living in the U.S. without legal status; most of them make their living in cities with large Chinese populations—such as San Francisco, California, and Boston. These individuals typically work in the restaurant industry—serving as waiters, dishwashers, food prep staff, and the like—earning around $4,000 per month. Others work as nannies or childcare providers for Chinese families, bringing in up to $6,000 a month. These roles tend to be filled predominantly by women, whereas men typically engage in physically demanding jobs—such as auto repair, home renovation, moving services, or truck driving—where they can earn upwards of $8,000 per month.
For Chinese people in the U.S., as long as you aren't lazy, you can certainly find a suitable job. There are many fellow Chinese there who are willing to help you get connected with opportunities—I, for instance, do exactly that: I bring together Chinese professionals working at major internet companies in Silicon Valley to assist our compatriots. Follow me to plan your study abroad journey with a clear focus on career placement.
